Welcome to Samurai Marketing!
Based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, this blog is all about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM): the incredible process of gaining relevant traffic (organic and paid) from search engines to further your business aims… Samurai Style!
We are at an amazing and historic time. In the last 20 years of our digital age, we’ve discovered astounding ways to organize and store the collective knowledge of our entire planet on the world wide web. The amount of information online is colossal, and growing exponentially:
- There are over 300 million websites currently on the web, with thousands added every day
- The most widely used search engine is Google with over 5 billion searches per day
Sometimes it can be hard to find precisely what you are searching for on the net, and even harder to be found by someone looking for exactly what you have to offer. If you spend no time, effort or resources on the search aspect of your site, your chances of being found dramatically diminish, especially compared to any of your competitors who are working on this very important element.
The good news is: By following a set of simple and ethical best practices for Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing, coupled with a little creative spice and tapping into social media and other online marketing channels, virtually any website can shine like a beacon on the ocean of information we now have at our finger tips.
Effective SEO is not just about ranking number one, or even ranking on the first page of Google, for any keyword that might be loosely associated with your business. It’s about consciously ranking well for the important search terms, backed by SEO keyword research, that your target market will use to find your site, and ultimately take you up on your offering. This blog will explore the essential components of this process, against the backdrop of a highly dynmamic and evolving search landscape.
Does your site have what it takes to shine in Cyberspace?
What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is important whether you’re a small business owner in Ottawa, or in charge of a large corporate website in Toronto. SEO is the process of optimizing your webpages, and your website as whole, to be highly searchable by your target market in order to attract web traffic that is relevant to your offering, ultimately resulting in more customers for your business. SEO is what makes your site stand out in the ever-expanding universe of cyberspace.
If you have a solid SEO program in place for your site, potential customers will proactively find your webpages, using keywords of their choice, on the search [...]

Google Carved Out the SEO & SEM Search-Scape with a Laser Focus on Quality
As 2012 winds down and the mercury drops in our nation’s capital, Ottawa, the world of SEO and internet marketing continues to evolve across the far reaches of cyberspace. This year, the major search engines continued to tighten up on quality control, and social media platforms figured out how to make money through online marketing and advertising.
We Canadians love our Tim Horton’s coffee, our NHL hockey, except when Gary Bettman locks out the best players on the planet and goes on vacation, and of course, our Internet; in fact, 88% of us here in Ottawa, 16 years or older use the Internet for personal use 2010 Internet [...]

The Anatomy of a Search Engine Result (Web Search Index Card)
In my meetings around Ottawa this fall, providing SEO Services to various companies, many clients, prospects, and web colleagues all seem to be asking me the same questions:
What is the information that comes up in a Google search?
Where does Google get this stuff?
What does this mean for my site?
What is a Search Engine Result?
The Search Engine Result is like an index card for your webpage in the library of the world wide web. The key to improve Search Engine Rankings and Optimization on Google or Bing-Yahoo is having this index card filled out with the proper SEO Meta Tags, using good Keywords, for each page on your site. Quite simply, if [...]

When it comes to the web, you have likely heard the phrase, “Content is King.” More than ever these days, high quality web content is rewarded by search engines with high rankings in search results, and is more likely to be virally promoted in social media. This makes sense, as most of us don’t want to waste our time sifting through and reading reams of poor-quality or mediocre web pages to find the gems we’re looking for. So what exactly is great content for the web, and how do we create it?
Great Web Content is… well written, interesting information about a trending or popular subject that captures the attention of your target market (the folks you want your message to reach), [...]

In the past few weeks and months, Google has made fundamental changes to how its algorithms rank webpages for search, creating both hope and discord in the SEO industry. I hear tales of websites tanking on their rankings and dropping significant web traffic because they have an abundance of poor quality backlinks (links from other sites pointing to their site) which they may have paid for or exchanged for over time. Equally, I’m seeing sites rise up in the rankings, based on good content and well-chosen keywords (relevant search terms people are likely to use to find a site).
We are in the midst of change on the internet search frontier.
The Google Penguin Update, released on April 24, 2012, lowered the [...]

One of the best feelings working as an SEO expert, with my clients, large or small, in Ottawa or across the continent, is seeing a site rise to a reasonable position in the google search engine rankings, to eventually achieve a first page result. Even better when it’s a keyword that is highly relevant to the content on the site, and appetizing to the target market in terms of search volume. Achieving such targeted rankings, using ethical but competitive methods, propels search engine optimization that is both sustainable and truly organic. This keyword research can also be used as a cornerstone for a solid search engine marketing (SEM) foundation. The most interesting part is: the weapons to do this are [...]

Keywords (a.k.a. search terms) are the words and phrases that people use to proactively find what they are looking for in search engines such as Google, Yahoo or Bing. The choice of keywords that prospects use to find what they are seeking on the web is a critical factor in determining what sites are going to be served up in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).
Definition of a Keyword:
A word that serves as a key to a code or cipher.
A significant or descriptive word.
A word used as a reference point for finding other words or information.
Any significant word or phrase, esp. a word used to describe the contents of a document.
